September 15 to October 15 marked the 30th National Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States, a month-long tribute established by President Ronald Reagan on September 14, 1989. It is, therefore, worth reflecting on the important presence of Latin American Muslims who represent the fastest-growing population of Muslims in the United States.

I embraced Islam at the age of 20…Now that I am approaching 40, I have spent almost half of my life as a Muslim; and looking back on my journey, I wish I would have done a few things differently. I decided to write a list of 7 things I would tell my 20-year-old, new Muslim self:

Yo era una extraña en un ambiente desconocido y para una adolescente, esto era algo devastador. Más que nunca, necesitaba confiar en mi fe para superar esta dificultad.

Unlike the rest of my class, who knew each other, had taken classes and passed grade levels together eagerly awaiting graduation, I was an outsider. More than ever, I needed to rely on my faith to make it through a depressing time.

At the first instance of embracing Islam, the new Muslim feels a sense of overwhelming joy, pride, and zeal. He or she wants to do everything in their capacity to learn about Islam and stay firm upon this path, by Allah’s permission.

Latinos continue to be the fastest growing minority in America and in Islam. If either of those facts come as a surprise, there is much for you to learn about our culture.

Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually in the United States from the 15th of September to the 15th of October. It began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and was upgraded to a month in 1989 to “honor the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans as we celebrate heritage rooted in all Latin American countries,” according to the official government website (hispanicheritagemonth.gov).

Me convertí al Islam a la edad de 20 años, y fue un momento decisivo en mi vida. Faltaba poco para que cumpliera 21 años, y mis amigas esperaban que celebrara la ocasión en una discoteca o comprando alcohol legalmente (en los Estados Unidos la edad mínima para comprar alcohol es 21). Se sorprendieron al descubrir que me había convertido en musulmana y que no tenía ninguna intención de aceptar sus invitaciones para salir de fiesta.

Antes del 9/11 estuve buscando la “verdad,” es decir, la manera apropiada de adorar a Dios. Me crie en un hogar católico, serví como monaguillo, asistí a un colegio católico y estudié la Biblia durante gran parte de mi juventud.

Type “Latino Muslims” into any search engine and the results will display a plethora of recent media reports about the fastest growing minority within Islam. Names like PBS, NBC, BBC, AlJazeera, the New York Times, the Washington Post, NPR, Univision, and Telemundo have all produced their share of reports and documentaries fixated on this phenomenon.

n el año 2000, cuando acepté el Islam, yo pensaba que era la única musulmana Latina en el mundo. Aprendí del Islam a través de mi amistad con una familia egipcia y conocí a musulmanes de otros países como Palestina y Pakistán, y hasta conocí algunos musulmanes americanos. Sin embargo, no fue hasta casi 2 años después que supe de otras personas como yo, musulmanes Latinoamericanos viviendo en los Estados Unidos.

I’m at peace and I feel like I have the answers I need to live my life according to what God wants from me.

Latino Muslims are one of the fastest growing segments of the American Muslim community. Though not part of the 'traditional' narrative, Islam is an inescapable part of Latino heritage.

Keeping this in mind, Latino and non-Latino Islamic organizations must develop both educational and support initiatives in order to establish the correct belief and implementation of Islam. In addition, they need to help steer newcomers away from deviant beliefs or downright negligence.

The first Muslim settlers were primarily Arabs from what is known to us now as Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and Egypt. They emigrated to Ecuador for the same reasons they came to the rest of the Latin world, escaping from World War I and II.

Recuerdo una vez cuando vivía lejos, que viaje para visitar a mi amiga en Maryland. Uno de los días que estuve con la familia de mi amiga se destaca en mi mente por la influencia que tuvo en mi vida.
